Let’s be completely honest for a second. If you are moving from the city to the Sound Shore, you have probably spent countless hours comparing towns online. The number one conversation I have with buyers relocating from Manhattan or Brooklyn always comes down to the exact same debate: “Jenny, should we choose Larchmont or Rye?”
I recently sat down with clients from Tribeca who were completely torn. They loved the waterfront in both towns, they knew both had incredible schools, and they were ready to start bidding. I looked at them and said that we needed to step away from the real estate apps and talk about how they actually want to live their day-to-day lives.
While these two neighboring towns share a gorgeous coastline and a fantastic commute to Grand Central, they offer two distinctly different lifestyles. If you are trying to narrow down your search, here is the unfiltered reality of what separates them.
Let's Talk About the Vibe (Because They Are Different)
The biggest difference between these two towns is the daily energy. You will feel it the second you spend a Saturday afternoon walking around.
- Larchmont: This town is famous for its walkable, artsy, and laid-back coastal vibe. It attracts a huge crowd of creative professionals, writers, and young families coming directly from Brooklyn. The village is compact and incredibly pedestrian-friendly, meaning you will constantly run into friends at the farmers market or grabbing coffee on Palmer Avenue. It feels very grounded, community-centric, and unassuming.
- Rye: Rye is slightly more formal and traditional. It is renowned for a very strong private club culture, boasting incredible yacht clubs, beach clubs, and country clubs right on the water. If your ideal weekend involves dressing up a bit for dinner at the club or hitting the golf course, Rye delivers a highly polished, classic Westchester experience.
The Commute and Your Daily Routine
Both towns offer an excellent commute to the city, usually clocking in around 35 to 40 minutes on the Metro-North express train. But how you interact with the downtown area is very different.
Larchmont Living: Everything is incredibly centralized. The train station is right in the heart of the village, and many of the residential streets branch out directly from downtown. It is very common for residents to walk to the train, grab a pastry, and head into the city without ever getting in a car.
- The Rye Experience: Rye has a stunning, historic downtown centered around Purchase Street, packed with high-end boutiques and fantastic dining. However, Rye is more geographically spread out. Depending on which neighborhood you buy in, you might find yourself relying a bit more on your car to get to the train station or to drop the kids at the beach club.
So, How Do You Actually Choose?
Honestly, there’s no bad choice here, but you definitely can't make the right one just by staring at a screen. Choosing between Larchmont and Rye comes down to how you want your daily life to actually feel.
